#apple #ipad - iPad: Flop, Win or Pudding - Skeptical, I explain why ==>

Apple_tablet_rumors

I am wondering if the much hyped Apple Table (iPad) will be a success as the iPhone is. It seems to me that this new piece of hardware will have to deliver more than what is (will be) written on the tin to have a significant impact. I have no doubt it will work perfectly well and it will be the prettiest and most in demand gadget in town, however I struggle to see why I would buy it for. Don't you?

Below are the reasons why I am not holding my breath on the Apple table:

  1. Like most, my budget for high tech is not infinite. As new tech gadgets cost more and more (iPhone, TV, digital content), I have to make a choice on what to buy first. I need a Laptop/PC and a phone but not much beyond that. Would I really want to carry a tablet on the tube to play games or read newspapers? Can I use this table while I am driving to work? Do I really want to use a tablet instead of a book (maybe we will see)?  It is unclear what I would use this product for in the current set up.
  2. The format is neither appropriated to work or to move with. I need a keyboard to work. I don't want a too large piece of hardware to move around. It is therefore to be used at home. Would it replace my laptop?
  3. When at home, would I use the tablet to play games? Maybe but if I am on the move, I would then use my phone and at home possibly the computer or the TV with a gaming console.
  4. I do not believe on purpose built applications for this device. As the tablet is going to be a nice tool to browse the internet, I think the "applications" will mostly be browser based as opposed as purposely built for it.

I still believe it could be a step change. Let me explain you why: I think that with more and more cloud applications available, the need for a large/heavy computer becomes less. We will soon need a “mobile” modem that will wirelessly connect to the internet, a keyboard and a screen (over Bluetooth). It will then replace our desktop computers. However, I cannot see why a “modem” like this could not be a phone. It would therefore just need a dumb screen to be connected to as the mobile phones have already all the needed capabilities and are already in our pockets.

In other terms, I do not see the need for a sophisticated tablet but more a for connectable dumb screen that my phone could connect to...

Let's forget the hype, the marketing and all the rest and see how people will adopt it. The truth is in the pudding.
